Inotropes and vasopressor infusion calculation

📌 Important Note for Nurses and Clinical Staff

This chart shows the usual safe infusion dose ranges for commonly used inotropes and vasopressors in critical care settings. These ranges are meant to guide safe practice when preparing and titrating continuous infusions, especially in ICU, CCU, Cath Lab, and emergency settings.

If a doctor prescribes an infusion, always:

  • Confirm the prescribed dose and unit (e.g., mcg/kg/min or units/min)
  • Check the dose against this reference range
  • Verify the prepared dilution (how many mg or units in how many mL)
  • Calculate the pump rate carefully before starting the infusion
  • Monitor the patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, rhythm, and clinical response closely

If the ordered dose is outside the usual minimum or maximum range shown in this chart:

  • ⚠️ Do not start the infusion immediately
  • 📞 Reconfirm with the prescribing doctor
  • 📝 Document the clarification according to unit policy

Remember:

  • These medications are high-alert drugs
  • Small calculation errors can cause serious harm (severe hypertension, arrhythmia, ischemia, or shock)
  • Always use double-check practice with another nurse when possible
  • Adjustments should be made gradually and based on patient response, not just numbers

This chart and calculator are meant to support safe practice, but they do not replace clinical judgment, hospital protocols, or the doctor’s orders.
